Bacterial field incubation

Agricultural antibiotic use, as in shrimp farming in the Philippines, is speeding up antibiotic resistance in regions with no affordable way to track it. The team is designing a low-cost, portable incubator that tests bacterial samples for resistance in the field, so health workers know which antibiotics will work.

Microbial responses to rain in dry soils

Soil microbes that release carbon dioxide, and methanotrophs that pull methane from the air, go dormant through Southern California’s dry summers. This new project measures how each group reacts to sudden rain, building on preliminary data from the Keller Lab at the Bernard Field Station.

Computer vision and biophysics

A two-camera computer vision pipeline extracts athletes’ joint positions over time. The team turns that data into velocities, forces, and torques to model what makes a pitch, spike, or throw succeed, with applications to injury and performance.
